The 106 & Park App from BET lets you become a part of “the livest audience on TV” without ever leaving your couch. The app includes many of the basics you would expect, but also ties into location and social network to create a more interactive experience. It adds another layer to the show that creates an “all-new 106 & Park experience.”
Artist Profiles and Updates
The app includes profiles on over 70 artists. Stay up on their pics, tweets, news and even video highlights of their best 106 & Park moments. Pick your favorite artists and get notified when they’re scheduled to appear on the show. The home screen provides up-to-the-minute updates on what’s happening with 106 & Park, including new music, Twitter topics, celebrity guests and special shows.
Twitter Wall and Live Nation
An integrated Twitter wall helps you keep track of tweets from your favorite artists and see what people around the world are saying about the daily Trending Topics. Send a tweet from the app to 106 & Park for a chance to have it read on air.
Taking social a bit further, Live Nation lets you see where other 106 & Park fans are located. If you’re running the app while watching the show, not only can other viewers see where you are, but you might even get a call from Terrence and Rocsi.
QR Codes and Games
Catch the Code provides yet another incentive to use the app while watching the show. Look out for the on-screen QR Code and scan it with the built-in reader to enter contests and unlock secret content. This only works for app users.
They’ve even included a game inside the app called Countdown Voting. The goal is to see how many votes you can scratch up for your favorite artists in five seconds. Play as much as you want wherever you are.
A lot of thought has gone into the development of this app and it’s definitely awesome to see a minority-focused company jump into the mobile space. Features like Twitter integration, location, and QR Codes should make the app a must for 106 & Park fans and provide a way for BET to engage these fans directly. I would definitely like to see them take things a bit further, including Facebook integration and maybe group chat.
Download the free 106 & Park app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad from the Apple App Store now and tell us what you think. Sorry Androids, you’ll have to wait until this summer to get in on the action. It doesn’t appear that there are any plans to develop the app for other platforms like Blackberry and Windows Phone 7, but BET would be missing out on a big chunk of their audience by excluding these.
